In September 2016, Al Jazeera English and One World Media collaborated on a joint workshop that explored the influence of different techniques of storytelling have on perceptions of power, authority, agency and ownership in documentaries from the global south. From concept to commentary, Ingrid Falck, Manager of Documentaries at Al Jazeera English and Fiona Lawson-Baker, Executive Producer of Witness, unpicked how a range of editorial decisions can reinforce or challenge dominant perspectives and stereotypes. As filmmakers seek out good global stories with strong characters, how can they also be sure that their techniques don’t unintentionally undermine their subjects?
