Islam in the Media: Are we getting it right?
Date: Thursday 21 September 2017
Location: European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
Join us to discuss UK media’s coverage of Islam and Muslim communities, and explore whether in an environment of global conflict and growing Islamophobia, nuanced and fair reporting can break down prejudice.
Our panel of broadcasters and expert commentators will examine the portrayal of Islam and Muslims and ask how journalists and broadcasters can confront stereotypes and challenge misconceptions.
The speakers:
FOZIA KHAN has 16 years experience working in documentaries, most recently as an Executive Producer at The Garden Productions. Her credits include Channel 4’s Extremely British Muslims for which she secured unprecedented access to Birmingham Central Mosque. Fozia was previously a staff producer at Dragonfly where she developed and produced a wide range of programmes including the groundbreaking, BAFTA nominated Channel 4 series, The Family.
TAREK OSMAN is the author of “Islamism” and the international bestseller “Egypt on the Brink”; the writer and presenter of several BBC documentaries, including “The Making of the Modern Arab World” and “Islam Divided”; and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s senior political counsellor for the Arab world. He will be moderating this event.
FATIMA SALARIA is Commissioning Editor for Religion and Ethics at the BBC. Her recent commissions have included the BAFTA winning Muslims Like Us, the recent Partition Season including Anita Rani’s My Family and Partition on BBC1 and Dangerous Borders – A journey through India and Pakistan.
