The New Humanitarian wins the Coronavirus Reporting Award 2020!

Selected from 400 entries across 68 countries, we are thrilled to announce that the winner of the OWM Coronavirus Reporting Award is How Coronavirus Hit Aden: A Yemeni Doctor’s Diary, The New Humanitarian!

This powerful piece of reporting shares the diaries of Dr Ammar Derwish as he documents the tragic impact of the virus on his community in Aden, Yemen.

Combining Dr Derwish’s compassionate writing, with Adly Mirza’s striking imagery, journalist Annie Slemrod produced an extraordinary and devastating testimonial of the pandemic’s impact on a country too rarely reported on by the media.

This award was presented during an online ceremony hosted by Mishal Husain.

“After the 2020 awards in June it was clear that because of the pandemic there was exceptional work by journalists and filmmakers covering it’s impact in developing countries that needed to be recognised – hence this special award.” Mishal Husain, BBC.

During the ceremony, we were also joined by Annie Slemrod and Dr Derwish, who discussed their award-winning article, and some of the judges of the award who spoke about the importance of spotlighting the work of journalists working on the frontline of the pandemic.

“These are important stories to tell. It’s more important than ever to have real, truthful, journalistic reporting, and many of these journalists have had to put themselves at risk to do so. This has really shown the impact that can have.” Cora Bauer, Media and PR Manager, Amnesty International UK.
