Our awards spotlight series celebrates the incredible work of some of the nominees of the One World Media Awards 2019. With only a few days to go until the ceremony, our final spotlight will focus on the three Special Award nominees. The final nominee is Salam Afghanistan Media Organisation, based in Afghanistan.

Our Special Award is unique in that it celebrates an entire independent media organisation that uses media to address social, cultural, political and economic issues, rather than a single piece of media or an individual. In a world of increasingly challenged media freedom it seeks to recognise and encourage outstanding reporting that informs the public, provides an outlet for local people’s voices, creates a space for critical information and holds those in power to account.

Salam Afghanistan Media Organisation, or SAMO for short, is one of Afghanistan’s leading media outlets, with years of experience producing and broadcasting diverse programmes in radio, print, online and social media to engage citizens with social, political, economic and cultural issues.

Since its launch in 2003, SAMO has grown to a network of more than 100 media outlets, covering 34 provinces and 300 districts. As one of our jurors highlighted, “SAMO has achieved the almost impossible in Afghanistan, sustaining itself as an independent, respected voice.”

Its impact has been huge: it has informed, connected and educated the people of Afghanistan, particularly women, in four languages for over 15 years, and has supported media development in rural areas through technical and financial assistance and training. We are therefore thrilled to be highlighting their incredible work as part of this year’s One World Media Awards.
