Storytelling Through Photography Workshop

With the digital space becoming increasingly reliant on visual elements, the ability to use photographs to draw attention to, and tell your stories effectively, is becoming more important. With time and budgets under pressure, how can you gather photographs that will tell powerful stories?

Join award-winning photojournalist Kate Holt for this two-part workshop which will examine how to create a photo story using the five-photo formula, as well as tips to improve your pitching, how to get your photos noticed and insights into how news organisations use photographs.

Introduction to storytelling through photography

The first session will give you a basic oversight into how to tell a story using photographs. This will be an interactive workshop, and together with Kate the group will break down, analyse and discuss a wide variety of photo story examples. Topics covered include:

  • What makes a story
  • How to tell a story through pictures
  • The five types of picture
  • How to take good portraits
  • Why captions are important and how to write them

Session Two  |  2 December, 3 – 4.30PM (GMT)

How to get your photos noticed and establish yourself

The second session will move on to look at how news organisations use photography, how to pitch stories and the use of photography on social media. We will also look at the type of equipment you need and provide insight into running a successful photography business. Topics covered include:

  • How news organisations use photographs
  • How to pitch photo stories to the media
  • Using photographs on social media – what works and what doesn’t
  • Business tips on photography
  • What kit do you really need

Who is the trainer?

Kate Holt is an award-winning writer and photographer. Kate trained as a journalist with the BBC before becoming a photographer. She has extensive experience of telling stories from very challenging environments and has taught a wide range of organisations how to take photographs, write stories and improve their communication skills, from African Union soldiers on the frontline in Mogadishu, to children in South Sudan.


Workshops are held online via Zoom video conferencing.
